Budget-minded starters
Fewer required hours than a Private certificate means a lower cost to your first solo and your first certificate. A sensible way to get flying without committing to the full Private certificate on day one.

A Sport Pilot license is the shortest path to flying as pilot in command, with a 20-hour FAA minimum, and for a lot of people it's the one that finally gets them flying. You use a valid US driver's license instead of an FAA medical to show you're fit to fly, so there's no medical exam standing between you and your first lesson at Venice Municipal Airport on Florida's Gulf Coast.
The certificate
A real FAA pilot certificate, and the easiest place to begin. It was built for people who want to fly for the enjoyment of it, without the extra hours a Private certificate requires.
A Sport Pilot certificate lets you fly a light-sport aircraft during the day, carry one passenger, and go up under visual flight rules. It carries fewer required hours than a Private Pilot License, which usually means less time and less money before you are flying on your own. The FAA minimum is 20 flight hours, half of the 40 hours a Private certificate requires at minimum.
None of that makes it a lesser license. It's a genuine certificate, taught to a real standard, with a checkride and an examiner at the end of it. The reason we bring up the Sport Pilot license first is the medical rule, which is covered in the next section.
If you are weighing this against the full certificate, our full flight training ladder lays out every rating side by side, from the discovery flight through the CFI ratings.
Who it's for
It's not the right answer for everyone, and we'll tell you straight if it isn't. It fits four kinds of people especially well.

If the FAA medical is the reason you've never started, the driver's license rule might be the reason you finally can. Bring your questions and we'll walk through them honestly.
If your dream is daytime flying over the Gulf Coast with one friend along, the Sport Pilot license covers most of what you actually want to do.
With a 20-hour FAA minimum, this is the quickest path to legally flying as pilot in command. Start here, then step up to a Private certificate if you want to.
Sport vs Private
The two certificates share the same first steps. They part ways on hours, medical, and how far the privileges reach.
| Sport Pilot | Private Pilot (PPL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum flight hours | 20 (FAA minimum) | 40 (FAA minimum) |
| Medical | Valid US driver's license | FAA Class 3 medical |
| Passengers | One | Up to the airplane's capacity |
| Time of day | Day only | Day and night |
| Weather | Visual conditions (VFR) | Visual, plus IFR with an instrument rating |
| Aircraft | Light-sport aircraft | Most single-engine airplanes |
Starting with Sport doesn't limit you later. Every hour you log toward the Sport Pilot license counts toward a Private Pilot License. When you're ready to step up, you add the training the Private certificate asks for, get an FAA Class 3 medical from an Aviation Medical Examiner, earn the required endorsements, and pass the Private checkride.
Plenty of people do exactly that. They start with Sport to see how flying feels, then earn their Private Pilot License once they know they want to keep going. Whichever way you go, you start with the same $199 discovery flight.

Correct, with conditions. For Sport Pilot operations the FAA lets you use a valid US driver's license in place of an FAA medical certificate to show medical eligibility, as long as you have never had an FAA medical application denied, suspended, or revoked, and you have no medical condition that would keep you from flying safely. That means no FAA medical exam is required to start. You still self-certify that you are fit to fly on the day, the same as every pilot. The rule is in the FAA's pilot certification guidance.
A Sport Pilot certificate lets you fly a light-sport aircraft during the day under visual flight rules, and carry one passenger. You can fly for the enjoyment of it over Florida's Gulf Coast. You cannot fly at night, fly for pay, carry more than one passenger, or enter certain controlled airspace without additional training and endorsements. The FAA sets which airplanes qualify as light-sport.
The FAA minimum is 20 flight hours for a Sport Pilot certificate, half the 40-hour minimum for a Private Pilot certificate. Most people need more than the minimum, and your real total depends mostly on how often you fly. Flying twice a week finishes faster than flying once a month, because you spend less time relearning the last lesson.
Yes. The hours you log toward a Sport Pilot license count toward a Private Pilot License. To step up you add the extra training the Private certificate requires, obtain an FAA Class 3 medical from an Aviation Medical Examiner, earn the required endorsements, and pass the Private Pilot checkride. Plenty of pilots start with Sport, see how flying feels, and move up when they're ready.
